Filipe Luís defies Flamengo’s pattern and could repeat the feat after 45 years.

If he fulfills his contract, the coach could field historic Flamengo squads.

Filipe Luís has agreed to a contract extension with Flamengo until the end of 2027 : this means he could stay at the club for more than three years and completely challenge the club’s established pattern. In just one year and three months in the job, he has already made history not only with titles but, surprisingly, also with his longevity.

By managing the team from the beginning to the end of 2025, he was the first coach to start and finish a season since Vanderlei Luxemburgo in 2011. Other coaches have spent more than 365 days, but not in the same year. Now, the former full-back can go even further and repeat a feat that no one has achieved in 45 years: coaching the Flamengo team for two consecutive full seasons — the last one, Cláudio Coutinho, stayed from August 1978 to December 1980.

What if he fulfills the contract?

If Filipe Luís stays at Flamengo for the entire agreed-upon period, he will not only become the player with the longest tenure this century but will also approach the ranks of the greatest in history. That would be 1187 days at the helm of the Rubro-Negro, placing him fourth overall.

Filipe Luís’ contract renewal

Flamengo announced early Monday morning (29) the renewal with coach Filipe Luís. The coach’s contract was due to expire next Wednesday (31) and had been going through difficult negotiations to be renewed. Throughout Sunday, the rough edges were smoothed out and the coach who won the Brazilian and Libertadores will stay until December 2027.

The contract renewal was negotiated by Filipe Luís’ agent, Jorge Mendes. The duration of the contract had already been defined a few days ago, but the coach’s salary and the commission became an obstacle. On Saturday (27), some pointed out that the impasse had reached its limit and that the coach was on the verge of leaving the club.

— The positive outcome was only possible because there was, on both sides, a genuine desire for the project to continue, as well as a joint willingness to converge interests and build a balanced and sustainable agreement that met the coach’s aspirations, but also the club’s governance policies established by Bap (Luiz Eduardo Baptista, president of Flamengo) — declared José Boto, the club’s executive director of football, in a statement released by Flamengo.
