Chabalgoity’s Orange Bowl debut is interrupted.
Fort Lauderdale (USA) – Rain disrupted the debut of Brazilian Pedro Chabalgoity in the men’s draw of the Orange Bowl on Monday. The match against American Vihaan Reddy was interrupted at the beginning of the third set. After losing the first set in a tiebreak, he fought back to tie the score at 6/7 (3-7) and 6/2 when the match was stopped.
Chabalgoity broke serve in the very first game of the match and then maintained the advantage until the final stretch. However, when serving to close out the set at 5-3, he was broken back, allowing Reddy to react and take the match to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, the American started strong, opened up a 4-0 lead, and then only needed to manage the advantage until the end.
In the second set, the Brazilian repeated his good start and again won the first two games of the match. This time, the home player reacted quickly and leveled the score at 2-2, but after that Chabalgoity won four games in a row, with two consecutive breaks, thus securing the tie and forcing a third set.
Reddy won the first point of the decisive set, but the game soon stopped, with the American leading 15-0 in the first game. The match will be completed on Tuesday, when the duel between American Michael Antonius, the 12th seed, and Japan’s Takahiro Kawaguchi will also take place; Kawaguchi will face the winner of Chabalgoity’s match.
Also on Tuesday, Livas Damazio from Mato Grosso will make his debut in the main draw. Coming from the qualifying rounds, he will face American Benjamin Saltman.
