With four goals from Pedro, Flamengo crushes Madureira and advances to face Fluminense in the Carioca final.
The 8-0 thrashing, which began with protests, also featured two goals from Lucas Paquetá.
Flamengo crushed Madureira 8-0 on Monday night (2) and secured a place in the final of the Campeonato Carioca . At the Maracanã, the goals for Rubro-Negro, who won the first leg 3-0 (11-0 on aggregate), were scored by Pedro (4x), Paquetá (2x), Samuel Lino and Jean Vianna (own goal). On Sunday, Filipe Luís’ team will play for the title against Fluminense, who eliminated Vasco.
Protests at Maracanã before and after the game.
Before the match even started, the atmosphere was tense. Upon the team’s arrival at the stadium, fans protested. The targets were president Bap, football director José Boto, coach Filipe Luís, and the players. The scene repeated itself in the stands as the teams entered the field.
At the end of the match, the scene repeated itself, with shouts of “shameless team”.
How was Madureira vs. Flamengo?
The star of the first half was Lucas Paquetá. Just four minutes in, Flamengo’s number 20 sent the ball into the back of the net from a corner kick. Initially, the referee called a foul on the play, but reversed his decision after VAR intervention. The midfielder scored again in the 16th minute, after a well-worked move with Pedro. This time, the linesman indicated offside.
With a four-goal advantage on aggregate, Flamengo gave the ball to Madureira, retreated, and looked to play on the counter-attack. It was in this way that Paquetá, in the 23rd minute, scored the second goal, after an assist from Carrascal.
But, besides the Flamengo midfielder, another player who made a significant appearance in the first half was the video assistant referee, Philip Georg Bennett. He recommended a review of a tackle by Wallace Camilo, from Madureira, on De La Cruz. The Tricolor’s number 10 was sent off.
With one more player on the field, Flamengo scored two more goals in the first half, with Jean Vianna (own goal) and Pedro.
Second half: more of Pedro’s show
Flamengo returned from halftime with their foot on the gas. In less than four minutes, Pedro scored two more goals. And it didn’t stop there! The number 9 found the net again in the 21st minute. A brilliant performance from the striker, who is looking to put behind him, with a great performance like this Monday’s, a subpar start to the season.
Outnumbered on the field, Madureira abandoned the game and tried to defend. Faced with this scenario, coach Filipe Luís sought to rotate the team and brought on Samuel Lino, Luiz Araújo, Wallace Yan, Luiz Felipe, and Daniel Silva, the latter two from the youth team. Lino, in the final stretch, scored the eighth goal.
Dictating the pace, Flamengo sealed the victory with an 8-0 score, making it 11-0 on aggregate. A win to shake off their poor form and give their fans a positive response.
