Benfica loses in Barcelona and is eliminated from the Women’s Champions League.

Benfica’s women’s football team lost to their Barcelona counterparts on Wednesday afternoon in Catalonia. The final score was 3-1. Ivan Baptista’s team is officially eliminated from the Champions League.

The match, which kicked off at 5:45 PM, was part of the fifth round of the Champions League group stage. The 15th-placed team was visiting the league leaders and one of the best teams currently in the competition.

Pajor opened the scoring for the Catalan side in the 29th minute, assisted by Putellas. The first half was dominated by the home team, but Benfica responded well in the second half.

Chandra Davidson equalized the game at 1-1 in the 46th minute, tapping the ball in at the far post. It was Benfica’s first goal at Barcelona’s stadium – on the other two occasions, the Catalan team won 5-0 and 9-0.

Shortly after, Lúcia Alves had a great goal opportunity with her right foot, one-on-one with goalkeeper Cata Coll, but she missed spectacularly.

Because those who don’t score suffer, Barcelona took advantage to score two goals in four minutes, at 54 and 58 minutes, benefiting from an own goal by Ucheibe and a goal by Aleixandri.

Also noteworthy is the great performance of Lena Pauels, who also denied Alexia Putellas a penalty in the second half and made several important saves.

Benfica has only managed one point in five games and is out of contention for further elimination from the competition with one matchday remaining. They will play their final match at home against PSG, who are also eliminated. Barcelona, meanwhile, remain top of the table with 13 points.
